The original kart racer is back on track with a motion-controlled edition for Wii. The 2008 release features classic characters, courses, and cups from previous Mario Kart games, both on consoles and handhelds. New tracks and championships are available as well, along with a new vehicle type. For the first time in the series, characters can race motorbikes as well as go-karts. Bikes can perform wheelies, and mid-air tricks add a speed boost upon landing. Many of the series' other classic power-ups return to the circuit in abundance, with plenty of koopa shells, bobombs, and invincibility stars. Several control schemes are available, making use of the Wii Remote (with or without the included snap-on steering wheel handle), the classic GCN controller or Wavebird, or the Wii's Classic Controller add-on. Following the lead of the DS version of the game, Mario Kart for Wii supports online multiplayer competition, for as many as 12 players in various modes. ~ T.J. Wii Sports Resort is a sequel to the original Wii pack-in game, Wii Sports. The title's resort is set on a tropical island, where players may take part in a dozen sports-based activities involving archery, basketball, biking, canoeing, golf, jet skiing, skydiving, sword fighting, table tennis, water skiing, and flying disc games with a cute, Mii dog companion. As in the original Wii Sports, Resort players participate in the activities by performing the motions of the real-life sports while holding the movement-sensitive controllers, such as thrusting and parrying with a sword, taking a slicing swing at a Ping-Pong ball to put backspin on it, flicking the wrist to toss a spinning disc, or leaning side to side in order to steer with air resistance while skydiving. The initial release of Wii Sports Resort is packaged with the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which attaches to the bottom of the Wii Remote controller and provides more precise movement sensitivity than is available with the original Wii equipment. ~ T.J. Jazz fusion is such a vague, misused, and generic term that it's a revelation when a band plays it correctly. The four players that comprise Garaj Mahal have been together for about a decade, honing their already sharp chops and delivering electrifying live performances that push the boundaries of jazz fusion into rock, funk, world music, and even blues, while maintaining a foothold in their genre. The band expands its scope even farther on Woot, recorded with few overdubs in three studio sessions spread out from May 2007 to April 2008. It's a defining work for the group, consistently throwing curve balls at the listener whose first response is likely to be astonishment at how these guys navigate a minefield of time and tempo changes with such aplomb. The nine longish, predominantly instrumental tunes are equally divided among the members, minus Kai Eckhardt's two-minute bass spotlight. Most solos are from guitarist Fareed Haque and keyboard master Eric Levy, but as in the past, it's the uncanny intertwining of the musicians that creates the tension and release here. There are Zappa-styled excursions ("7 Cows Jumping Over the Moon"), funky New Orleans side trips ("Uptown Tippitinas") and even an Eastern European influenced dance ("Ishmael and Isaac") that shifts gears so often it's nearly impossible to follow on first hearing. Somehow this all gels and never seems weird, eggheaded or overly eclectic for the sake of it. As primary soloists, the bulk of the onus falls on Haque and Levy, who elicit unusual sounds from a variety of stringed instruments (including a Moog guitar) and keyboards that are surprising without being jarring. There are plenty of fireworks from bassist Eckhardt and drummer Alan Hertz, too, as they keep the pocket throbbing while the other two blast off. At 70 minutes, this is a lot of Garaj Mahal to absorb, especially since each track seems like its own musical voyage. The disc demands several spins just to absorb all the stylistic twist. It's always sad to see a barrage of scandalous headlines overshadowing a talented singer or producer's musical accomplishments. But let's face it: tabloid scandal "journalism" sells, which is why, regrettably, some people associate Michael Jackson with the Elephant Man's bones more than Thriller or Off the Wall, and why there are those who associate the name Rick James with crack pipes and prison rather than the 1981 funk/soul masterpiece Street Songs. And similarly, there are some younger listeners who may not know much about the Wall of Sound but do know legendary producer Phil Spector for going to prison in 2009 after being convicted of second-degree murder. According to his wife, Rachelle Spector, he produced and arranged her debut album, Out of My Chelle, before the conviction (although the album didn't actually come out until the summer of 2010). Some people have alleged that he didn't really produce this CD; at any rate, Out of My Chelle certainly doesn't sound at all like anything he produced in the '60s or '70s. Rachelle Spector's specialty is sugary, synth-driven dance-pop along the lines of Britney Spears or Hilary Duff, although there are a few adult contemporary ballads as well, and production-wise, there isn't even a hint of the elaborate Wall of Sound technique that Phil Spector became famous for; he had a distinctive production style whether he was working with the Ronettes, the Righteous Brothers, Ike & Tina Turner, or the Ramones; that style is nowhere to be found on Out of My Chelle. So, let's say that one heard this material on Radio Disney and had no idea that Phil Spector was involved; one would conclude that while the thin-voiced Rachelle Spector isn't very convincing on ballads, although some of the dance-pop tunes are catchy enough (most notably, "Got Me Where You Want Me" and "Risk"). This is an uneven, inconsistent effort, but on occasion, she does come up with a groove that works. Of course, some of Phil Spector's die-hard admire. Store: fye.com

With the mixed reactions to the first two prequels in the trilogy, fans and critics alike have been waiting nearly a decade for the third and final installment to the Star Wars saga, the sixth overall in the series. For fans, it's a redemption for having to endure characters such as Jar Jar Binks and the acting of Jake Lloyd in order to watch Anakin Skywalker make the transition to one of the most important villains in all of storytelling: Darth Vader. For critics, it's the ultimate litmus test to see if George Lucas can truly develop and tell a story without leaning too heavily on special effects and the magic of digital wizardry. Throughout the nearly three decades the Star Wars universe has been in existence, the music has played an integral storytelling role equal to the special effects. Composer John Williams has created his own language along with Lucas' character development during the series, and as a result could have easily coasted through the final score. Instead, Williams has more than stepped up to the task, delivering a harrowing score that complements the transition of Anakin Skywalker to the dark side. Familiar motifs in the Star Wars universe - motifs that are embedded in the consciousness of even the most casual of pop culture fans - make their appearances here. Some, like "The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)," make their full unabashed return in sweeping, dramatic glory; through subtle placement, half developed passages, and quiet motifs, they were only previously hinted at in the scores of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Making less prominent appearances are the anthems of the first two movies, "Duel of the Fates" and "Across the Stars," complementing the eventual transition to the classic trilogy just as much as the visual storytelling itself. Gone are the experimental passages and sequences that relied on heavy tribal and unconventional symphonic instruments, and in their place are long sweeping string passages and. Store: fye.com
A scrawny rat named Remy (voice of Patton Oswalt) finds his dreams of culinary superstardom stirring up sizable controversy in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant in director Brad Bird's madcap computer-animated comedy. It's hard being a rat with culinary aspirations, but Remy is convinced he has what it takes to break the stereotypes and follow in the footsteps of star chef Auguste Gusteau (voice of Brad Garrett). As fate would have it, Remy is currently situated in the sewers directly beneath Gusteau's elegant restaurant. Soon Remy teams up with a young chef with little talent named Linguini (voice of Lou Romano). Together they are able to create some fabulous dishes, but they live in fear that someone will discover their secret and object strenuously to a rat being in a kitchen. When Remy's passion for cooking turns the haughty world of French cuisine upside down, the rat who would be king of the kitchen learns important lessons about life, friends, and family while questioning whether he should pursue his culinary calling or simply go back underground and return to his life as a sewer rat. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Store: fye.com Brand: Walt Disney Video

Wii can make beautiful music, together with a single player or a whole band of them. More of a sophisticated sonic toy than a game, Wii Music allows users to arrange and play along with a collection of classical and traditional songs. Players can apply a choice of several musical styles, such as rock, jazz, and Latin, to any tune in the song list. The choice of instruments is the players' as well, and the game offers a selection of more than 60, including guitars and banjos, pianos and vibraphones, and a variety of drums. Once the arrangement has been made, it's up to players to perform it. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk are used as all sorts of performances, in a fashion meant to mimic the real-life strumming and drumming of the instruments. Instead of demanding note-matching precision, Wii Music encourages virtual musicians to play their own way. Whether they shake to the beat, speed it up, or let it drop, the software blends the player's controller movements into the flow of the song. As many as four players can perform a song, each using a controller as a different instrument. Performances can be recorded and played back, with videos of Mii characters playing their parts. Recordings can be shared over the Internet with other Wii Music players, who can add their own changes to the recording and share it as well. ~ T.J. The first "Trek" film to feature the cast of the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series without any of the members of the original series, this action-packed hit was well received at the box office. The Federation comes under attack by its ongoing enemy, the Borg, a cybernetics-enhanced race that once kidnapped Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), "assimilating" him into a drone. As a former prisoner of the Borg, Picard is ordered to stay out of the new battle, but he cannot resist and orders the brand-new starship Enterprise into the fray. The Enterprise follows the only surviving Borg ship through a time tunnel, where they intend to conquer Earth in an earlier era. The Borg have targeted the work of Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell), inventor of warp drive, the device that makes interplanetary travel possible. As the Enterprise crew attempts to stop the Borg from interrupting the work of Cochrane and his assistant, Lily (Alfre Woodard), Borg drones invade the Enterprise and take it over piece by piece, while Data (Brent Spiner) is captured and seduced by the Borg Queen (Alice Krige). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi Store: fye.com USED: Monty Python's Spamalot [Original Broadway Cast Recording]
While millions of fans have made a hobby out of repeating Monty Python bits for the amusement of themselves and others over the years, Spamalot may be the first example of folks going pro with this pastime - though Eric Idle's participation at least gives this the advantage of also being an official product. Spamalot is, of course, the stage musical loosely based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and while the original cast album only provides part of the experience, listening to the album will give many fans a very curious sense of deja vu - some of these songs are drawn from the movie, albeit with a great deal more polish (such as "Brave Sir Robin" and "Knights of the Round Table"), and others translate business from the film into musical terms ("He Is Not Dead Yet" and "Run Away"), while "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" from Life of Brian is also thrown in for good measure. The score does manage a good bit of original silliness, though, including a number of amusing parodies of show tune clich? s ("The Song That Goes Like This") and one truly inspired new laugh-generator, "You Won't Succeed on Broadway" (".if you don't have any Jews"). In many respects, the Spamalot recording favors Broadway over Python; the material lacks the sharp edge of Python's best material, and the level of polish seems nearly antithetical to those old television shows and the low-budget film that inspired all this. But the songs are sprightly, the material is genuinely witty, and the cast is in fine fettle, especially David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin and Sara Ramirez as the Lady of the Lake. In short, this won't replace your copy of Another Monty Python Record, but Python fans will have fun with it, and it's a great trailer for the stage show. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Store: fye.com

Director Tim Burton and screenwriter Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King) team up to deliver this visually dazzling take on the classic Lewis Carroll tale. Nineteen-year-old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is attending party at a lavish country estate when she sees a white rabbit with a pocket watch dart into the bushes. Curious, she follows the rabbit to an enormous tree, and tumbles down a hole that takes her to Underland, a strange world inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures in search of someone to save them from the dreaded Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), who has assumed control of the kingdom by decapitating anyone who dares disagree with her. According to a scroll detailing a historical timeline of Underland - including events that have not yet taken place - it is Alice who will set the kingdom free by defeating the Jabberwocky, a powerful dragon-like creature under the control of the Red Queen. But is this Alice the same Alice who appears in the scroll? While some of the creatures of Underland have their doubts, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and his friends are certain she's the same girl who previously visited them years ago. When the Red Queen kidnaps the Mad Hatter, Alice attempts to free her friend and locate the one weapon with the power to slay the Jabberwocky, thereby restoring the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) to the throne, and bringing peace back to Underland. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Store: fye.com Brand: Walt Disney
